Why can we find lonely shoes on the road?

Whatever the place I may be in, either Paris, Donnery, Orléans or Bangalore, I always noticed single shoes left to be flattened by cars on the road. I asked myself how could anyone lose only one shoe? I noticed the same thing with socks in France. Not only you can find lonely shoes on French roads, you can also find lonely socks... But could a person be forced to leave behind only one of such items so much required to walk?!

I found an answer just yesterday...

I was walking on the street, coming out of the campus, to go and buy some stuff so as to take a break from my studies. Right at the entrance/exit of the campus, there is some work being conducted on the road. Something actually pretty scary, especially if you are keen on avoiding stepping in the wet mud which completly covers the road from one side to the other. Indeed, the workers have dug a very big hole, about 2 metres deep, 2 metres wide and 2 metres long so as to reach some kind of big pipe. Therefore, if you want to avoid being splashed with muddy water when cars come by, it is necessary to walk very close to this hole.

Being a bit scared at night since my sight is not particularly good after dusk, i prefered joining what is left of the footpath on the other side of the road. There, there is a long stone which runs along the road and leads to the actual footpath, some 10 metres farther, right next to a pool of muddy water (which I presume to come from the sewage system :)).

So, on my way to the shop, I manage to walk on the stone and reach safely the footpath. I'm happy and proud! I did not get wet and my jeans are safe from muddy stains!

But the way back is another story... lol

Being so proud of walking through these obstacles, I go back in a much careless way (because "I" definitly new the way now!) and right before reaching the stone, I put my foot in what is clearly shitty water from the sewage system... And not just a bit... Up to the knees,... feeling my feet going deeper inside the mud... I needed a few seconds to realise what had happened. Yes, I was wet... Yes, it stinked very badly... Yes, it was a disgusting cold feeling... and yes, I lost one shoe while trying to step out. My left shoe was literally swallowed by the muddy shitty water.

Left with only one shoe, I took it off, and went back home bare foot, with poo, dung and shit on my jeans, up to the knees.

I was not so proud anymore, and particularly sad to have lost half of my pair of favourite orange shoes, matching with so many of my clothes.

I cried over it when having multiple showers, after which I still felt the "sewage fragrance - made in Bangalore".

I guess that some day, when the footpath will be cleared, my shoe will be thrown somewhere next to the road.

So now I know why we can find lonely shoes on the roads.
